blood cells

Instructions: Fill in the missing words by listening to or watching the Youtube clip - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co6iuDpaQTM&t=39s&ab_channel=FuseSchool-GlobalEducation

What is __blodd____?

Blood is always red, right? Wrong. Blood comes in a variety of colours. It may be __red____ in

humans and in other ___mammals___, but an octopus, for example, has blue blood and oscillated

ice fish have blood that is completely clear ... and in Papua New Guinea there are green-

blooded skink - with green __blooded____. So don't be fooled into thinking blood is always red.

We are going to discover what blood is made of and the roles of the different components.

Blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma.

Fifty five percent of our blood is this pale yellow sticky liquid called plasma. Plasma is

mainly made up of water and proteins. It __carries___ nutrients, hormones and proteins around

the body and it also distributes heat around the body, so it is pretty important.

However, this is not the part that makes blood red, green, blue or clear. ___plasma___ equals

about 92% water and just under 8% _plasma_____.

About 45% of our blood is made up of red blood cells. Red blood cells are ___tiny___ bi-concave,

disc-shaped cells known as erythrocytes. They are made in the bone marrow and contain

a special iron-containing protein called haemoglobin.

____haemoglobin___ is what enables our red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body and it is

haemoglobin that makes our blood red. blood cells___octupus___ have a different special protein called

haemocyanin which makes their __blood____ blue. The ice fish doesn't have either haemoglobin

or ___haemocyanin___ which is why the blood runs clear.

____white___ blood cells and platelets make up less than 1% of our blood. White blood cells are

warriors. They protect our body against invasion from disease-causing organisms known

as __pathogens____. These clever little cells do this in two ways.

____70___ percent of our white blood cells are phagocytes and engulf foreign pathogens in

a process known as phagocytosis...or the others are lymphocytes which produce

____antibodies___. Antibodies bind to the foreign pathogen and stop it from invading further.

You will learn more about white _blood_____ cells when learning about __disease____ and how our body

defends itself against pathogens.

Now....finally __platelets____. Platelets make a tiny fraction of our blood. They help the blood to

_____clot__when you cut yourself, stopping the bleeding and preventing the __wound____ from

becoming infected.

You should now know that blood isn't necessarily __red____, and the colour depends on what the

blood cells are made up of. Blood consists of nutrients, heat transporting plasma, and the oxygen carrying red blood cells. Less than 1% is made up of very important pathogen-fighting white blood cells. Lastly, blood has clotting platelets.

Answer these questions in your own words:

  • What makes human blood red? A protein called hemoglobin makes the blood red

Cloning and de-extinction

DNA is the building block of all life. When unraveling a human Dna it can go around the sun for about 61 TIMES! Amazing right? But that's not all, did you know that there are 100 trillion cells in the human body and 23 sets of chromosomes.

Cloning is when you get DNA from any living thing and use the DNA to make a copy. There are 5 steps of cloning, the 1st step is getting DNA from something, then the next step is to study the DNA (finding the genome sequence), for the 3rd step is to fill in the gaps using DNA from a similar animal (E.g. for a moa, you would use emu or ostrich DNA), the next step is create an embryo and find a mum, for the last step wait for it to be born. The very first cloned mammal was Dolly the sheep who was cloned in 1996 July 5 and died in 2003 it only lived for 6 years and was cloned in scotland. Cloning is kind of the same thing as de-extinction but cloning is when you take DNA from a living organism and de-extinction is when you get DNA from an extinct animal’s fossil. Natural cloning is when you only get your mum’s or your dad’s DNA.

In the school journal, page 12,  Return Of The Moa? by Quinn Berentson, it was talking about extinct animals that can be de-extinct, for example, Moa, Wooly Mammoth, Huia, Tasmanian Tiger and many others, but what are the reasons why? The reason why is because it could fix the mistake that they have made in the past, bring happiness to the world, also when you bring them back you get to have a closer look at the moa. But there are some animals that can’t be de-extinct because the fossils are too old and there are not enough in it as well.

Thera are some bad reasons you should de-extinct things because you never know if it will work or what it will do, another reason is it is enormous and called probably eat you. Also we should just focus on saving the animals that are endangered like kiwis and other endangered animals, there are 2,786 different species that are threatened all over New Zealand. Another reason is you might not even succeed, but if you do and successfully bring back the moa it might go out and eat all of the animals that are extinct.

I think that bringing extinct animals back to life will be another problem to the world because we have no idea what will happen when they go back alive. But cloning animals will be no problem because we know what will happen when they get cloned.

Athletics 2020

In 13th of November 2020 we had a very fun event, we call this Athletics day. it is the day where 4 teams compete for the best winning house, the teams were, Tobruk, Tripoli, Benghazi, Alamein. The point of the game is to get the most points for your team by playing field events such as shot put, discus, high jump, long jump and  standing jump. Aach team has a gazebo to stay on so people don't get sun burned.

For the first game I did, was Shot Put the rules of this game is to places the shot by your shoulders and your not allowed to throw only push, whoever gets the farthest push wins the game and gets to represent their school. The next game I played was Standing Jump, the rules of standing jump is to jump where you were standing and no double movements. For the third game I played was discus, a tip for discus is to throw it at the right time and ahold it from the front. the  fourth game I played was long jump, long jump is a simple game all you need to do is run and try jump your farthest but you have to jump before the line but if you don't you get disqualified. The last game I played was high jump, for high jump you just have to jump over the pole then land on the soft mat, but the only technique you could do was scissors. after all of that then we had morning tea.

After morning tea we moved on too...RACING, first it was juniors first it goes to 5 year old boys/girls then to 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, there are a 50 meter race then 75 meter race then 100 meter race and a 400 meter race but that is only for the older people. But then in the end Alamein won then Benghazi then Tobruk then Tripoli

about the cell

For the cell work that I learned was very important it tells me about the different organizers that are inside of animals and plant cells, the most important organizer. In a plants and animals, Cell like nucleus the most important part of a cell it is the brain of the cell, vacuole, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum but in the animals and plant may have the same cell but it is a little different.

science sentence

octopuses and squids can camouflage to warn, signal, fight, hide and to hunt, but it makes 100 camouflage decisions in a two hour foraging. It also has these bump on its back that is called a papillae, the papillae helps the octopus create a 3d texture to change the skin, the papillae is also malleable. The octopus can mimic a lot of things, it can mimic seaweed, it can mimic mostly all the plants in the sea. It only takes 5 seconds to 1 for some octopuses to camouflage.

2020 explanation text

What it feels to learn in 2020

In the year 2020, there had been many cases and many negative experiences, in my opinion I think this has been the worst year i've ever experienced, but in this story I will be talking about what happened during 2020, and people were losing their jobs because of the virus that 2020 was the worst year for me because covid19/coronavirus and people were losing their job and people were buying heaps of stuff so people ran out of a lot of stuff. People also could not go on flight but if they did they had to have two week.

In the first week of lockdown nothing was really happening but people were panic buying, as soon as I heard that there was online schooling I knew I had to get ready for everything, we had to get our devices, books and other stuff. Every morning I always have to wake up and get ready for online schooling, which was really difficult because I had to set up the place I'm gonna be sitting in.

2 weeks later after lockdown When i got to school everyone started getting excited because they haven't seen their friends in 2 weeks and even though Covid 19 was still spreading around the world all of us didn't care about it… which was rule breaking but I just ignored it. After term 1 another lockdown accrued which means i had to do it all over again.

Camp Raglan

On Monday 21st of september when camp started the seiners had a trip to camp raglan for two hours. I was sitting next to rudolph. And I was sitting in front of Maria and ana. There was a toilet stop in the gas station. When we made it, everyone had a meeting in the hall. But first we put all of our bags in the hall. When we finished having a meeting all of the kids went to go set up their dorms /beds. Then we all went for a walk to the beach. When Miss Ashley said NOT TO GO IN THE BEACH all the kids went to the beach. Me and my friend Davlyn were the last one to go to the beach. No one listened to Miss Ashley when she said NOT TO GO. then we all went for dinner. When some kids were awake at night time teachers had to go tell them off or move dorms. On the first day of camp a window in the bathroom was already broken.

Then on Tuesday everyone had to wake up around 7:00 so everyone could go for a beach walk or wait and set up the tables for breakfast. After breakfast all of the kids and teachers went for a meeting. There were 3 groups. 1 group did orienteering and the other group went for kayaking then the last group went for sports. When i had lunch and dinner everyone had a movie night. Miss Ashley called a meeting cause on the first two days most of the kids weren't listening. Stuff was broken, kids were having a fight and then people were sad. When i had lunch i was sitting with davlyn, ehthoo, mathew, wesley and kymani.

Then on wednesday in the morning everyone had breakfast then the 3 groups went for their orientation, rock climbing, and paddling. For lunch on wednesday we had pasta cake and water. After lunch everyone went to play at the pools, gym and the park. The girls had a party because it was Lily's birthday. And everyone had to sleep early because some boys had a fight.

On thursday we were supposed to go on a beach walk, and have outside games. But then it was raining the whole entire way. So the only activities we were allowed to do was rock climbing, sports in the gym and fiafia show. Heaps of boys were crying because they were gonna go back home. We were playing team games and activities. Everyone was supposed to sleep at 9:00 clock, but sleep at 11:00 o’clock. And we had marshmallows.

On friday some kids went for a beach walk. Then the other kids were cleaning up their dorms. After breakfast everyone went outside. Then we all had hot dogs for lunch after we had lunch, kids were packing up their bags and went back home. When we had 2 hours back home people were unpacking their bags and going to the hall. Miss sharma said that whoever broke the stuff they had to pay for it.

  3. Make a timeline of how WW2 started - include dates, locations, maps etc.

  4. On a map, find Normandy. Make a connection to other places in France you have learnt about before/heard of before and write 1-2 sentences of what you know about each one.

  5. Explain the role radios played in the resistance. (what they did, who had them, how did they work?)

camp

School camp is a great way for kids to take a break from technology and school. It is better to go to camp so you can build better relationships and get new friends and also you can bond more with your friends. They also give you a lot of food and it is very yummy. They also give you desert. They also take you on fun activities. On the bus we were allowed to bring some lollies to eat on the bus or to eat at the camp.

When you go camping you are not allowed to bring any electronics to camp only the adults can, so that means you can have a break from all the social media and other games. When you have no electronics you have to go to whoever you want to talk to and talk face to face. You also get to meet new people and go on heaps of walks like to the beach walks, night walks and bush walks, they also get to play around with your friends and get to make new friends.

They give you some very yummy food like hot dogs, nachos and other food but the desert is yummy. They give you stuff like chocolate fudge and chocolate mousse and it is for free. Best of all it the activities there are some very call activities like archery, air rifles and kayaking. But the worst thing that can happen is it will rain on the day when all the fun stuff will happen. That's what happened to my camp. We missed out on air rifles and archery. So when it rained we had to stay inside but we got to watch movies and listen to music and do inside activities. We also got to roast some marshmallows in the fire and then we got to eat it but first we needed to go outside and get some sticks so we could put the marshmallows on it so we don’t burn ourselves.

For some people it is their first time in their own cabins or dorms but you have to bring your own blankets and pillows you were allowed to bring sleeping bags. Before we went to sleep we got to eat some lollies we brang from home or we were allowed to talk. We had to get in bed at a certain time then you're allowed to talk then you have to go to sleep.

On some activities it said no go, go or wait, no go means you are not allowed to go there. Go means you are allowed to go at any time and wait means you need to wait for an adult to come and let you go.

I think camp is good for kids because they get a break from so many things and they also get to make new friends and meet new people and your bond with your old friends will get stronger and you can learn new things and do new things, for example I learnt that not all the jellyfish will sting you.

Why is it important to swim

It is important to swim because of other people that come where it's landlocked and they might drown because they’re not used to swimming. NZ has over 700 beaches. In 2018 68 people drowned and die (watersafety.org). There are 15,000 km of coastline, making it the 3rd longest coastline in NZ (wikipedia.org). Some people that are new to swimming take swimming lessons at the pools. It is important to swim so you can save one of your family members if you drown.

If you swim you will be able to save someone if they fall in the water. It is good to be able to swim so you can be confident to save yourself or someone else.

When you swim you can help yourself stay healthy and strong.

When you are able to swim you can prevent someone from drowning. In 2017 92 people died and mostly kids which is very sad.

It’s a tradition to take your family and go to the beach and use the BBQ to get some food. When we go on the ocean kids and adults wear life jackets. When kids go on school trips overseas they have to wear a safety jacket to keep them safe. If someone is going to drown
