Fractions - Word Problems


W.A.L.T: Use our times table knowledge to solve fraction word problems. 


Of the 48 students on a field trip to the zoo, four-sixths want to go see the bears. How many students want to see the bears?

= 48students/6 X 4

= 32 student who would like to see the bears

Five-sevenths of the 49 plates in the cupboard are blue. How many blue plates are in the cupboard?

= 49 plates/7 x 5

= 7 x 5

= 35 blue plates

Five-ninths of the 27 books on a shelf are non-fiction. The rest of them are fiction. How many fiction books are on the shelf?21

Three-ninths of the 45 animals in the zoo are monkeys. How many animals are there in the zoo that are not monkeys? 30

Four-sixths of the books on the shelf are picture books. The other 24 books on the shelf are non-fiction books. How many picture books are there? 48


There are 78 pieces of fruit in the fruit bowl. One-half of them are apples. Of the remaining fruit, five-thirteenths are oranges, five-thirteenths are pears and the rest of them are bananas. How many of each fruit are there in the bowl? 39 apples, 15 oranges, 9 pears and 15 bananas 


There are 104 pencils in a container. Four-thirteenths of them are blue, three-thirteenths of them are red, four-thirteenths of them are orange and the rest of them are purple. How many of each colour are there? 32 blue, 24 red, 32 orange and 16 purple



There are 108 animals at the zoo. One-third of the animals are monkeys, two-sixths of the animals are tigers, one-sixth of the animals are lions and the remaining two-twelfths of the animals are elephants. How many of each animal are there? 36, 36, 18 and 18
